Character oriented program editing - habit or necessity?

Zorica Suvajdžin, Miroslav Hajduković, Žarko Živanov

This paper advocates a viewpoint that the program text is not a simple string of characters but a complex structure built of components defined by the programming language. So, the program editing is not to be based on characters handling, but on handling components defined by the programming language. The paper describes how such handling can be done, and discusses properties of the suggested approach.
