The Helmholtz (self-adjoint) conditions for differential systems of second and first order have been heighlighted by many authors. On the other hand the discretization of systems of differential equations of first and second order leads to mechanical integrators which are described with difference equations. The paper establishes the Helmholtz conditions for variational integrators associated to discrete evolutive systems.
